Registering and Competing your horse in France

Competing with your own pony/horse in France

Inscrire votre cheval

First of all your horse should be enrolled with the French Haras Nationaux (National Stud) now called France Haras, part of the "IFCE" (Institut Français du Cheval et de l'Equitation).

So if your horse has a British passport, the horse will need a second Identification by the vet or the Haras. For Foreign horses there is a cost: around 110€ for the Haras + vet ID. Your horse will be delivered a unique "SIRE" number.

If it is a French horse it should have its "livret" entitled "Document d'accompagnement", where you will find the unique "SIRE" number. You should also have a "carte de propriétaire" (when you buy a horse you have 8 days to have that "carte de propriétaire" sent and changed to your details). After the horse is 12 months old it can be re-identified by a vet or the Haras.

To compete, your horse will need to be on the "liste club et ponam" for club competitions (equivalent to Unaffiliated competitions* in UK) , or the "liste de chevaux de sport" for Amateur or Pro competitions (equivalent to Affiliated competitions in UK).

To do this your horse :
first - needs to be registered with Haras Nationaux - numéro de Sire
second - the page 3 of the "livret" must be "validé" and dated (by the Haras Nationaux), and "carte de propriétaire" up to date (free)
third - the horse needs to be inscribed on the "liste de chevaux de sport" for Amateur and Pro competitions, or the "liste des equides club et poney" for club competitions (free).

Since 2015 "Inscription" is now free and done via the FFE website. This is how (in French; will translate when I have more time):

Just in case this would help further, one of our customers wrote:
"I've cracked it! To register for club competitions only, when you have logged in on the FFE compet site, click on top right "mon espace perso" and it comes up with a page with two things. Opening an account (not necessary) and Propriétaire. Tick the box that says
"je me déclare propriétaire d'un ou plusieurs cheval/pony" et voilà, it's a breeze from there!"
